H-E-B Educating, Helping Diabetes PatientsPosted: Updated: Mar 28, 2016 05:21 PM
WESLACO — H-E-B and CHANNEL 5 NEWS are teaming up to educate, inform and help people with diabetes.
All week from 9 a.m. to noon, including weekends, at select H-E-B locations, people can get tested for diabetes absolutely free.
"It’s really important for people to be well informed on the epidemics here in the Valley,” said Yvonne Loflin, H-E-B public affairs specialist for the border region. “We want them to come in and take care of themselves, and nobody can do that better than them.”
Diabetes is a growing disease in the Rio Grande Valley.
“We're also testing their blood pressure, because, lots of times, high blood pressure and diabetes go hand in hand,” said Melissa Closner, H-E-B Pharmacy region director.
The number of people living with diabetes is a concern for doctors, dieticians and pharmacists.
“It’s very important that people are aware of their health condition and know how to treat it,” Closner said.
People who visit participating H-E-B locations will also learn about the importance of nutrition, what to eat and what to stay away from.
"Half of your plate should be of fruits and vegetables, to make sure you get those vitamins and nutrients that your body needs to stay strong and healthy,” said Andie Gonzalez, H-E-B border region dietician. “Really focusing on those other food groups as well, so lean sources of protein, helping our customers look at healthier options when it comes to carbohydrates to really manage their diabetes."
