SOUTH OF MERCEDES - There are several unique places stories take CHANNEL 5 NEWS reporters every day in the Rio Grande Valley. Photojournalist Rick Stewart says there is a unique history behind a place known as Rio Rico. Its located just south of Mercedes off Military highway and Rio Rico Road.

Stewart says, "The area was named after a settlement that was there back in the late 1800's. In 1906 a couple of guys illegally diverted the river and consequently 400 acres or so that used to be on the U.S. side of the river was now in Mexico."

The hundreds of acres were given up to Mexico in 1977. However, Stewart explained, "those born there between 1906 and 1977 could retain their U.S. Citizenship."

Despite the recent unrest on the south side of this waterway, Stewart says Rio Rico is still a very peaceful place to visit.
