EDINBURG – The face of a Rio Grande Valley hero is painted on a mural inside an H-E-B to honor him.

A mural of Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez is now up at the H-E-B of Freddy Gonzalez and McColl. The unveiling of the painting happened Friday morning.

Gonzalez served in the U.S. Marines in the 1960’s, fighting in the Vietnam War.

Gonzalez died while serving. His mom, Dolia Gonzalez, was there during the reveal.

“They’ve done so much for my son and for me. They’ve helped me a lot so I’m really happy, really happy,” Gonzalez’s mother said.

H-E-B also made a $10,000 donation to the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg.

Sekula died while serving his country. The money will go to a mural of Sekula to honor him.
