Shots Fired after Driver Crashes into Police Units

LA JOYA – A La Joya officer fired shots, after a driver crashed into two police units.

La Joya Police Chief Ramon Gonzalez said officers got a call this morning about a suspicious vehicle at an El Pato restaurant, located on the 500 block of East Expressway 83.

According to the police chief, an officer approached the vehicle and ordered the driver out of the vehicle. We’re told the driver refused and instead reversed, hitting two police units. One belonged to the Penitas Police Department and the other belonged to the La Joya Police Department.

The officer fired at the vehicle. A passenger in the car ran out. He was eventually caught.

The police chief said the driver led police on a chase, which ended along the riverbank. CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned a boat was waiting for the man. He got on the boat, which headed toward Mexico.

The police chief said nothing was found in the vehicle. He suspects it was preparing for a shipment.

Charges are pending for the passenger who was arrested. The investigation has been handed over to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department.
