2 Dead in Starr County Crash

ESCOBARES – Two people were killed in a crash in Escobares Sunday night.

DPS Lt. Johnny Hernandez tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS the crash happened on Highway 83 near San Julian. A Chevy Tahoe crossed a median and hit a Crown Victoria then a Ford F-150 was struck.

Two passengers in the Crown Victoria died. They were identified as 45-year-old Maria Zulema Garcia and 75-year-old Elena Lopez Cantu. Both are residents of Rio Grande City.

The driver of the Crown Victoria was taken to the hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet was airlifted to McAllen Medical Center. No one in the F-150 was hurt.

DPS says alcohol may have played a role in this crash.
