Company Working to Partially Remove Dome Structures at Prison

RAYMONDVILLE – A prison in Willacy County, known as “Tent City,” will be partially torn down.

A riot broke out in the facility in 2015. The company who oversees the prison, Management and Training Corporation, said they’re working with a contractor to remove the dome structures.

Insurance will cover the cost to remove the tents.

A spokesman for MTC said the tents are being removed because the company doesn’t believe another contractor would like the idea of housing offenders in tents.

Right now, MTC continues to market the facility, hoping another company will take it over so the prison reopens.

Nearly 400 people were laid off when the prison closed.
