MCALLEN – A U.S. district judge sentenced two former Donna ISD school board members for their involvement in an extortion and bribery case.

Eloy Infante got the maximum punishment. U.S. District Judge Randy Crane sentenced him to 46 months in federal prison. Infante will also serve three years of supervised release after serving his time in prison.

Elpido Yanez received a 37-month prison sentence. He’ll also be under supervised release after his prison sentence is complete.

The two former school board members admitted in federal court to extorting and bribing a company that had a contract with the school district. They accepted partial payment on a deal to keep the company under contract.

Investigators said Juan Adrian Guerrero acted as the middle man and accepted one of the payments on the behalf of Infante and Yanez. Guerrero was sentenced to 18 months behind bars, followed by supervised release.

The three men are scheduled to turn themselves in to U.S. Marshal custody on July 22. The Bureau of Prisons will decide what prison the men will be assigned to.
