Parents Gearing Up as Child Heads Off to CollegePosted: Updated:
PORT ISBABEL – It’s something parents eventually have to face when their child decides to move away for college.
“I think that letting go is really important for a parent, even though it seems like sometimes they shouldn’t, or they don’t want to. It really helps the child and explore the world,” Ramsey Green said.
Green is a senior at Port Isabel High School. GEAR UP inspired him to branch out and seek other opportunities.
During the summer, Green attended a camp that changed his life.
“This summer, I went to a camp for MIT for almost seven weeks. It was the longest I had been away from home. The hardest thing was not being able to see my family and all of my friends and everybody back at home,” he said.
Green said his parents have taught him how to succeed in life.
“My parents have always been there to guide me in the right direction. They have always been by my side, pushing me to do things that I necessarily did not want to do, and then later I realized wow that was really fun or I learned something from that,” Green said.
The student’s parents said they have other children who have left the nest but it doesn’t make it any easier.
“When Flora decided to go out of state, so for me it was hard because she as the first one and like a typical Mexican mom, I said think about it, so stay in Texas just for the first four years, so she stayed,” Martha Green said.
“All of our kids, except for Ramsey, have gone to college. We have been blessed in that way,” Jude Green said.
The senior said he’s glad he took a chance and went to that summer camp at MIT.
“I wanted to be a civil engineer before going there; I want to be a mechanical now,” he said. “Through GEAR UP, they have shown me a lot of colleges, so I’m not afraid to go out and do think that it has made a difference in me just applying to this camp out of state.”
His father is happy that GEAR UP is part of his son’s life.
“I know a lot of kids that are going to college and are planning to go to college because of GEAR UP and this is during the last two or three years. Some of the kids I have known since Ramsey was a little boy. GEAR UP has done that just by going to the colleges and seeing it’s possible,” Jude Green said.
The available possibilities for many students are thanks to GEAR UP.
