HIDALGO – A Hidalgo woman wanted to renovate her home just before the holidays but instead was left with a mess and a loss of thousands of dollars.

Engracia Gutierrez wanted to extend a room and do minor renovations.

“I wanted to make (a) room bigger and put a restroom. That was the first thing I told him, that was my goal,” she said.

Gutierrez hired Javier Ancer Jr. with Ancer Remodeling. They drafted up a contract with the details of the planned renovations. It stated the renovations would cost $16,300.

Gutierrez said she paid Ancer more than $14,000 up front.

She said her home looks nowhere near complete. A bedroom was destroyed and even a closet door was broken.

“There is no sink, there’s no mirror, not even light, nothing is finished here, not even the floor,” Gutierrez said.

She claimed Ancer worked on her home for a weekend and never returned. He didn’t answer her calls or messages.

She filed a police report with the Hidalgo Police Department.

“He came here the next day, bothered and said, ‘Ma’am, I’m going to give 100 percent into your home,’” Gutierrez recalled.

She said the last time she spoke to Ancer was over two months ago.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to Ancer who said he would contact Gutierrez. She said she hasn’t heard from him.

Ancer called us to tell us he will be sending someone over to Gutierrez’s home in the next couple of days to evaluate the work he did on her home. Then, he’ll return what he owes her.

“I’m desperate right now. Christmas is here and all the other holidays came, and I’m here sleeping in my living room,” she said.

We will continue to follow the story to ensure Gutierrez receives her money.
