1 Killed, 1 Hospitalized in Falcon Lake Shooting

FALCON LAKE – A shooting on Falcon Lake left one person dead and another in the hospital.

The Zapata County Sheriff's Office said 26-year-old Oscar Eduardo Garza was fatally shot while on a boat on the lake. We’re told 21-year-old Javier Gonzalez is in the hospital, recovering from hypothermia.

Investigators said the two Starr County men were on a boat around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, when they exchanged words with someone on another boat.

Zapata County Chief Deputy Ray Del Bosque Jr. told CHANNEL 5 NEWS Garza and Gonzalez took off when they saw a weapon on the other boat.

“Supposedly, they gave chase, and that's when they were shot at,” said Bosque. “When the bullets started hitting the boat… the guy was jumping off at the same time. By that time, the passenger was already hit.”

Investigators will eventually question Gonzalez once he gets cleared. The chief deputy said the other boat involved may have sped off into Mexico.

Authorities are figuring out if the shooting happened in Mexico or U.S. waters. The Zapata Sheriff's Office and the Texas Rangers are investigating. They seized two boats and two pick-up trucks as part of the investigation.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS learned there was a witness to the shooting, who was on a separate boat. Also, a Border Patrol aerostat near the shooting recorded surveillance video. Investigators said they plan to learn exactly what happened from the video.

We’ll bring you more updates as soon as they become available.
