RANCHO VIEJO - Texas Citrus Mutual representatives said they've destroyed what they believe to be the last of the trees infected with a devastating citrus disease in the Rio Grande Valley. 

CHANNEL 5 NEWS first started following the effects of citrus canker in the Valley in 2015. The disease can bruise the fruit and prevent the tree from growing fruit. Anyone from citrus growers to homeowners with citrus trees can be impacted. 

The infection can spread easily by strong wind, people carrying the infection on their hands and clothing, or by moving infected plants or plant parts. Trees infected with citrus canker need to be destroyed to stop the spread. 

Texas Citrus Mutual officials report they've destroyed nearly 300 limes trees in the Rancho Viejo area since 2015. While all known trees with the disease have been destroyed, it can come back. The United States Department of Agriculture is monitoring the Rancho Viejo area for more cases. 

Texas Citrus Mutual representatives told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the Houston area is battling the disease; if a strong front passes through the area, it can carry the disease to the Valley.
