Mail Deliveries in Indian Hills to Resume Next Week

UPDATE (6/16): Mail service will soon resume at an Indian Hills community. 

The U.S. Postal Service said they had to halt deliveries in the area because of bad road conditions. 

Hidalgo County Precinct 1 told CHANNEL 5 NEWS residents were notified of the street construction before it began. 

According to USPS, the majority of mail deliveries in the Indian Hills area resumed on Friday. 

All mail deliveries should completely pick up by Monday.

INDIAN HILLS- A Hidalgo County woman said she and her neighbors haven’t been receiving their mail deliveries for three weeks.

Indian Hills resident Susana Beraza said her mail box is connected to her heart. Her husband is serving time in state prison and she writes to him every week.

Beraza told CHANNEL 5 NEWS getting his letters is the bright point of her week. But when those letters stopped coming, she panicked.

“I was worried about my husband. I didn't know what was going on, and he's my husband and I worry. This is the only way we communicate for now," she said.

Beraza said she called the post office to find out why she wasn't receiving any mail. She said they blamed her road for the issue.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to other residents on Beraza's street. They said mail trucks drive by but do not stop to deliver mail.

We reached out to U.S. Postal Service spokesman Sam Bolen to find out why Beraza and her neighbors weren't getting their mail. He sent us the following response, which reads in part:  

“We were not given advanced notice by the county before [the] project started. Not certain how county notified residents of the project.  Normally, when we are told beforehand, we send notifications to each customer advising them to pick up mail at the local post office. 

Mail can be picked up during normal business hours at the Mercedes post office, located at 307 Starr St., until normal delivery can be restored.  Business hours are Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

We will resume mail delivery once roads are restored to normal and mailboxes are safely accessible. Based on our latest information from the county we anticipate all residences will be accessible within about 6 weeks. Some may be accessible sooner.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience this has caused our customers.  Normally, when mail delivery is not available due to poor road conditions or severe weather, customers may pick it up at their local delivery post office.”

CHANNEL 5 NEWS will continue to monitor the situation and track when mail deliveries return to normal.
