Hill Grades Himself, Vaqueros on Season 1Posted: Updated:
EDINBURG - Basketball players and teams often make their greatest improvement in the summer. Besides work on the court, the off-season is a chance to examine the good and the bad of the past season. Lew Hill's first season as head coach was UTRGV's fourth straight campaign with ten wins or less. What's next? CHANNEL 5's Ruben Juarez reports.
The wins were hard to come by, but coach Hill sees his first year in a positive manner. It was a learning experience for everyone involved in the program.
Hill explains, "Rookies all the way around, including me and the players. We only had three guys playing Division I the year before and I never even thought about it. It was like coaching 15 freshman.
The Vaqueros' 2nd leading scorer from the past season has transferred. Hill says that goes with the territory.
"It wasn't expected, but you know, that's a part of basketball. It's like an injury - next man up. We need Lew Stallworth to step his game up, We need Lesley Varner, Xavier McDaniel, Moe McDonald. We need those guys to step up. We'll improve. We've been through it a year. They know what I'm like as a coach, and I know how they are as players. The journey continues."
That journey will get a boost from a pair of incoming transfers that Hill is excited about. Former UTEP forward Terry Winn and Australian 7-footer Johnny Crnogorac are due in Edinburg for the fall.
