Dance Studio Welcomes Children with Special Needs

HARLINGEN – A dance studio in Harlingen is welcoming children with special needs.

Palm Valley Gymnastic and Dance opened its doors 30 years ago. Children from all ages advance through their programs.

Mary Alice Oxford, the owner, said they always find a way to accommodate any family or student.

Holly Montemayor is an instructor at the gym. She said nothing makes her happier than to see children from all walks of life work together and grow as a team.

“We include them in our regular classes. That it is important for them to get the feel of having the socialization for everyone to be around,” Montemayor said.

Luci Simpson said her 5-year-old daughter, Charlotte, began dance and gymnastics two years ago. She said she loves how informed the instructors are and how they help children who may have special needs, like her daughter.

“It’s not just learning the gymnastics, the skills and the technique, it’s also learning routine and being part of a team and working with her trainers and her teachers. We just benefit so much from this dance and gymnastics,” Simpson said.

The dance studio is open to any student enrolled in school.

Charlotte’s mother said her daughter has grown into a stronger young lady. The interaction in the classes helped her and for that she’s thankful.
