Early Morning House Fire in Mercedes

Posted: Updated:

MERCEDES – Three people are in the hospital following an early morning fire.

Mercedes, Weslaco and Edcouch fire departments responded to the 12000 block of Meza Circle in Mercedes.

The homeowner, Hector Rodriguez, said it was his mother that realized their home was on fire when she woke up just before 6 a.m. Everyone made it out of the home safely.

Rodriguez said he had recently remodeled his home and lost everything.

“The house was already engulfed. We didn’t have time to do anything. We could only call the fire department and when they got here everything was already burning,” said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, his mother and son are at Knapp Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

At this time, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The home was declared a total loss.

The American Red Cross has stepped in to help the family with housing and essentials.
