First & Goal Friday: October 6th

MERCEDES - Brownsville Veterans' quarterback Gustavo Vasquez scored three touchdowns, the last one in the final two minutes of play, to give the Chargers a 24-17 district victory at Mercedes in the CHANNEL 5 Game of the Week.  The win was pay back for last season when Mercedes went into Brownsville, and knocked off the home team.  The Chargers, Edcouch-Elsa and Lopez all lead 32-5A with 2-0 district records.  Edcouch-Elsa knocked off Donna 27-7.  Lopez won on Thursday.

In other 5A district action, Rio Grande City improved to 4-0 in district 31-5A with a road win in Laredo over Cigarroa 38-3.  Sharyland overpowered Roma 35-14.  Mission Veterans Memorial is the first Valley team with six victories this season after defeating Pioneer 61-38.
