Local Businessman Receives National Award for Life Service Award

Joe LaMantia Jr., founder of L&F Distributors, was recognized Monday morning at the National Beer Wholesaler Association’s 80th annual convention and trade show.

Joe founded L&F Distributors, a beer, wine and liquor distributor, in McAllen, TX in 1978. He, along with his five children have grown the business from 20 employees, to more than 1,200 employees across Texas- Mexico border and Southeastern New Mexico. His vision and drive also led to the state-wide distribution of craft beer and boutique wine and spirts through L&F’s sister company, Favorite Brands.

“Our dad is a first-generation American whose father originated from Sicily and didn’t speak English very well,” said Greg LaMantia, manager at L&F Distributors and Joe’s son. “He represents the American dream. He started a business, grew it from 20 employees tomorethan1300, with the expansion of L&F and Favorite Brands, and has been able to keep it a local, family-owned and operated for almost 40 years.”

Along with his passion for the beer business, Joe is also very involved with the communities he services through both L&F and Favorite Brands. While he gives back to multiple non-profits and community organizations throughout the state, his greatest achievement is the scholarship foundation he started, Stars Scholarship Fund.

“The Stars Scholarship fund was founded by our father in 2002,” said Val LaMantia Peisen, Joe’s daughter and manager at L&F Distributors. “He has always been a champion for higher education and through the support of our communities, Stars has awarded more than 30 million dollars in scholarships to more than 14,000 students.”

His passion for both his community and his business are recognized by this prestigious award. L&F and Favorite Brands will continue to be family-owned and operated with Joe’s leadership and the support of his five children and 18 grandchildren.
