Convenient Change for Registered Voters

Posted: Updated:

WESLACO – There may be some changes in the way you vote starting this voting season.

Some people may view voting as a hassle, but the Hidalgo County Elections Office is looking to get rid some of those hassles.

"Absolutely I think it's one of those things when it's voting day. You always have to look up where the polling place is, where are we supposed to go to vote, where's my, you know, what precinct am I in," said Katherine Garcia, a registered voter.

She hasn't been out to vote yet, but she'll be heading there before the election season is over.

Garcia knows voting is important, but a couple of changes could reduce that hassle and others.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS caught up with Yvonne Ramon with the Hidalgo County Elections Office to see what changes have happened since the last time an election hit the Rio Grande Valley.

"For the first time, what we are piloting this November 7 is called Countywide Poll Place Program," said Ramon.

This means come Election Day, registered voters no longer have to drive to one poll location to vote.

"Now any day during early voting, or on Election Day, you can cast your ballot at any poll location. No more rejecting you because you're at the wrong location," said Ramon.

Ramon also said Hidalgo County has had different ways for registered voters to obtain a proper ID for about a year now.

"Most common from the DPS are your driver’s license, personal ID, you have what is called an EIC, which is an election ID which is only for voting given out by DPS for free. Also there is the concealed hand gun license,” said Ramon.

“If you do not possess one of those seven, then you can declare an impediment,” said Ramon. “You can present then a utility bill, any government document, a telephone bill, your bank statement; anything that shows your name and an address.”

A person can't use this declaration if they forgot their ID. If an ID is forgotten, then a provisional vote may apply.
