Construction Crews Continue Work on Port Isabel Lighthouse

Posted: Updated:

PORT ISABEL – Port Isabel officials said construction at the lighthouse should be complete by the end of this month.

Valerie Bates, marketing director for the city, said the final stage is to add an outdoor railing at the top of the lighthouse. She said that will give visitors a 360-degree view of the area.

Merchants around the lighthouse said they’ve been struggling for customers. One jewelry maker said she would’ve had double the sales this Black Friday if the lighthouse had been open.

“It is affecting us, really bad the first few months. Now, people are getting used to it – that it’s closed,” said Alicia Portales. “But the first months were difficult because people want to stop first at the lighthouse and then look around the other shops.”

The renovation project began on Oct. 2016 and was originally scheduled to be completed by February.

Any changes in design had to be approved by the Texas Historical Commission. Officials said that’s what caused some of the construction delays.
