EDINBURG – It’s been a memorable year for the SaberCats. After two playoff wins, Vela is excited about playing another contest.
“Getting to the third round is great, “ says junior running back Aaron Alvarez. “Second time in Vela history to get there. Being my first time in the playoffs, it’s great. Seeing my team with all the success we’ve had is great.”
“A lot of confidence, “ said senior quarterback Nate Garcia. “I feel we did our job. We did very good. We held our own and into the next game.”
That next game is against a very talented Austin Westlake team, which features several players that will suit up in the college ranks. That includes running back Nakia Watson who has committed to Wisconsin.
“They’re playing high school football,” said Vela head coach John Campbell. “It’s not like we’re playing against the Green Bay Packers. It’s another football game. They get progressively more and more difficult, but there’s no magic dust or magic pill or magic wand that you’re going to take that is going to make you more ready than you were the previous week. That’s why you practice.”
“It’s just like all the other games,” said senior safety Nick Enriquez. “They’re a really big school and they’re really good, but we feel we can do it. We just study hard, practice hard, and work hard. Just mentally be prepared and be ready to fight it out.”
Vela’s third round game against Westlake kicks off Friday night at 7:30 pm at Gregory-Portland’s Akins Stadium.
