First & Goal Playoffs: December 1st

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI - On Friday night, three Valley football teams failed to overcome the obstacle that regularly pops up in this round of the UIL playoffs.  San Benito, Vela and Weslaco East all tried to move on to regional semi-final matches in 6A play.  All three failed in the attempt.  San Antonio O'Connor handed San Benito its first loss of the season in Corpus Christi. The Greyhounds were stopped 52-43. Vela also suffered defeat for the first time this season.  The loss to Austin Westlake was more lopsided as the SaberCats fell 70-14.  In the Alamodome in San Antonio, Cibolo Steele defeated Weslaco East 36-21.  The losses leave one remaining Valley contender to play on Saturday.  Los Fresnos may face the biggest challenge of all in defending state champ Lake Travis.  That regional quarter-final will be played Saturday afternoon in Los Fresnos.

CHANNEL 5's First & Goal coverage reported live from the three games on Friday.  Sports Director Joel Villanueva leads the way, joined by sports reporters Brandon Ortega and Ruben Juarez.
