Brownsville Officer Will Not Face Charges in Shooting

BROWNSVILLE – A Cameron County grand jury decided a Brownsville police officer that fatally shot a man acted accordingly.

District Attorney Luis Saenz said the no bill ruling came down Wednesday, meaning police will not face any criminal charges for the shooting of 31-year-old German Ornelas.

Saenz said the investigation was led by the Texas Rangers.

He said an autopsy revealed Ornelas was shot once on the right shoulder area and a second time in the back as he lunged forward. That was the shot that proved fatal.

Police chief Orlando Rodriguez said the officers are back on duty.

He said the body cameras proved valuable in providing the facts in the case.
