SAN BENITO--Two people taken to the hospital after a fire at a bakery in San Benito are recovering.
Police chief Michael Galvan says the fire started inside the ceiling at La Especial Bakery on the 300 block of West Robertson Saturday. The fire is now out.
Galvan says a police officer and owner were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
The cause of fire is under investigation.
The business has been around for 75 years.

"This is a place where everybody comes, especially in the wintertime, all week long. holidays, 24/7," said Moses Ornelas whose family owns La Especial Bakery.

Ornelas said he was just leaving work when he saw the smoke.

"I grabbed one of the apron's from the bakers and i just wrapped it around and ran in and tried to help my dad and one of the bakers get out of there," said Ornelas.

Ornelas and other family members were outside the bakery Sunday morning making sure the orders that were salvaged were delivered to their customers.

"We were able to get all the tickets and call the customers up, so that way they can come pick up their orders today," said Ornelas.

Ornelas said customers want the baked goods they are used to getting every weekend. He doesn't know when they will be back in business.

"Depending on the inspector, what he says, we don't know when we'll open up. We don't know what the future holds for us, at least for the meantime," said Ornelas.

He hopes the doors of this San Benito landmark won't stay closed for long.
