PHARR – A woman is recovering after suffering a gunshot wound while shopping at a grocery store.

Officers responded to the H-E-B on the 1300 block of South Cage Blvd in Pharr in reference to a woman needing medical attention at about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say the 22-year-old woman was shopping in the store when another shopper had dropped a concealed handgun which then discharged as it hit the ground.

The woman, who suffered injuries to one of her lower extremities, was transported to the Rio Grande Regional Hospital for further treatment.

H-E-B Senior Manager of Public Affairs Border Region Linda Tovar says in a statement:

"At HEB we strive for safety in all areas of our stores and parking lots. HEB is committed to providing a safe environment for all our partners and all our customers ... HEB is working closely with the Pharr Police Department and is cooperating fully with their investigation."

No word if the woman will file any charges.
