Current Conditions Raise Vehicle Fire Concerns

WESLACO – Windy conditions, tall dry grass and a hot car exhaust are ingredients for grass fires, according to the Weslaco Fire Department.

Lt. Armondo Martinez says a car’s catalytic converter can act like a lighter.

“Those can get up to 800 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit,” he says, “and with that, just parking near or parking on tall grass is enough to actually ignite the fire.”

He says if you have to park in a grassy area, water down the grass around and under your vehicle.
