Progreso Girls End District Drought

Posted: Updated:

PROGRESO – It’s a moment that will be etched in Red Ant history. For the first time in 15 years, the Progreso girls basketball team won a district game.

“The buzzer rang and I was still in shock,” said head coach Lydia De Leon. “It was the longest thirty seconds. Probably an experience I’ll never forget.”

“It was amazing,” said player Tamara Pecina. “When people think of Progreso, they think of an easy win. But we proved them wrong Tuesday. It was awesome.”

The win was special for Sydney Alaniz, who was on the team for the last 37 district losses. She’s one of three seniors that will be remembered for helping end the drought.

“I really wanted to leave good steps behind and everything for my team,” said Alaniz. “It’s just all or nothing so we just gave it our all.”

“She was really proud,” said teammate Lesly Barrera. “She told us to keep up the hard work and to just play with heart.”

Not only did the varsity team make history. On that same night, the JV girls team won their first game of the season with a thrilling come-from-behind rally.
