Valley Instructor Highlights Benefits of Hands-On Learning

HARLINGEN – The motto in the welding school is practice and more practice, says a Texas State Technical College instructor in Harlingen.

Kenny Moore tells us students learn by doing versus focusing solely on textbook theory.

The man is responsible for setting the tone in the workshop to motivate his students.

Moore says it took a role model in his life to set the path.

“That would be my dad. He got me into welding,” he says. “He taught me how to repair heavy equipment. That was the initial bug that got me right here.”

Moore says he develops his students from beginner to career ready. Amongst them is GEAR UP graduate Gustavo Antonio.

“My desire to build stuff started when I wanted to be an architect, but it wasn’t as hands-on,” says the TSTC student.

Antonio says he looked into a career in welding instead.

Now, he says he’s weeks away from completing one year in the program.
