SPI announces new Junior Lifeguard Program

Posted: Updated:
South Padre Island - The City of South Padre Island Fire Department would like to invite youth, between the ages of 10 to 16, to participate in the 2018 Junior Lifeguard Program.  Tryouts will be May 12 and 19 at 9 a.m. at the Fire Station located at 106.W Retama. We will meet at the SPI Fire Station and then relocate to a pool for the swim test. There will be no charge and the first 20 participants to pass the swim test will be accepted into the program.
To participate, youths should have an interest in the beach environment, must be able to swim two laps (100 meters) without stopping, and be able to tread water for five to seven minutes depending on their age category.
The Junior Lifeguard Program will begin June 11 and end July 13. Classes will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon. Fridays are an “optional” sports training day and will offer a more intensive physical training and competition practice.
“We hope many will participate in this new and exciting program,” said Doug Fowler, Fire chief. “This camp is a great first step for those who are interested in eventually becoming South Padre Island Beach Patrol lifeguards.”
