Edinburg Kids Tune Up Volleyball Skills

EDINBURG – It’s a new, summer adventure for kids in Edinburg. For the first time, the Edinburg school district is offering free camps for a variety of sports, including volleyball.

“Summer time is hot,” said Edinburg volleyball coach Deanna Dominguez. “Sometimes kids are just stationary at home. This is a good opportunity for them to be engaged. To stay out of trouble and just to be physically active and make new friends.”

Volleyball coaches from all four Edinburg high schools are teaching at the camp. It’s a way they can give back and a way they can inspire kids to play high school sports in the future.

“It’s a great way to bond within the community so that the students get a state of all four coaches being involved in volleyball,” said Vela volleyball coach Araceli Ortega.

“We have some of our former kids helping out as well,” said Dominguez. “Just working with the kids. It’s a great thing for our community.”

For many of the boys and girls, it’s the first time they learn about volleyball. The hope for the coaches is, these skills pay off down the road.

“It’s just like anything else,” said Dominguez. “The more kids do something, the more they practice, the more they read, the better they’re going to get. I think it’s a great opportunity for all of our Edinburg kids.”

It’s high fives and good fives at this camp. A place where it’s okay to make mistakes.

“You really have to try to stay as positive as you can and encourage,” said Dominguez. “So you can keep on progressing through the camp and make good choices and not get hurt feelings and just shake off those mistakes.”

Along with volleyball, the school district is also offering camps in basketball, soccer, and wrestling. While the basketball camp has already concluded, soccer and wrestling will be available in the next few weeks of June.
