Gridiron Heroes: Rocking The National Anthem

RIO GRANDE CITY – Victor Canales III can play all sorts of music on his electric guitar, but his favorites are rock and heavy metal. When he was asked to play the national anthem at Friday’s game, he was a little surprised. Okay, maybe more like shocked.

“I was so panicked before the national anthem,” said the Rio Grande City senior. “I was asking my friends, ‘When do I play? When do I play? When do I play?"

Canales had never played the national anthem on his guitar before, so he checked out some videos on the internet and put together a rock star version of the patriotic song. After eight years of playing music, this was Canales’ time to shine. It was the biggest stage and the biggest audience he had ever had.

“This has been one of my dreams since I was a little kid,” said Canales. “Have a crowd roaring. Doesn’t have to be my name or anything. But just to have the recognition and the appreciation.”

As the song came to an end, Canales pulled off some guitar tricks to wow the crowd.

“Just you know shred it,” said Canales. “I think of it as a little cherry on top.”

Canales says he was honored to play the national anthem.
