REYNOSA, Mex.  – A 1-year-old boy is back in the U.S. after his mother was found murdered in a hotel in Reynosa over the weekend.

The boy, a U.S. citizen, is currently in custody of Child Protective Services. CPS’ Mexican counterparts handed him over to U.S. officials hours ago.

He was found in the backseat of an SUV in the parking lot of a 7-11. Witnesses told authorities the vehicle was parked for several hours.

They approached the vehicle after they noticed no movement towards it.  Inside, they found the boy still strapped to his car seat.

Investigators said the boy’s mother was found dead inside a Reynosa hotel Saturday night.

“I can confirm the child was her son. The child is an American citizen and will be repatriated to the U.S.,” said Tita Ernestina Carmona, director at Reynosa Family Services.

Carmona said the boy was checked out by a doctor and was found to be fine.

His grandparents did come forward to report to authorities that the child does belong to the woman that was killed.

They, however, are Mexican nationals so they cannot take custody of the boy.

No information has been provided about the boy’s father.

Mexican authorities are investigating the murder of his mother.
