SAN BENITO – Two San Benito police officers are back on patrol after being assaulted Wednesday night. They were responding to an altercation.

It happened at a home near Scott Brown Road and Franklin Street shortly after 8 p.m.

When officers arrived, other family members stepped in to interfere.

San Benito Police Chief Michael Galvan said one officer was tackled to the ground and punched by a suspect. The other officer was also punched.

Police said while in custody and in a patrol vehicle, one suspect also kicked out the windows of a San Benito patrol unit.

“Our duty is to prevent further crime from occurring, further violence from occurring, so in the process of preventing that further violence sometimes even the victims will defend their attacker. Emotions run high, everybody sees their loved ones – sometimes it’s the breadwinner that’s going to jail and the victim stars wondering what am I going to do,” Galvan said.

Two men and a woman were arrested and are awaiting arraignment.

They’re each expected to face several charges including assault of a police officer and interfering with police duties.
