WESLACO – Gov. Greg Abbott spread $5.8 million throughout counties along the border, including the Rio Grande Valley, to crack down on crime.

Hidalgo and Cameron counties received $500,000 and $330,000, respectively, for their Border Prosecution Units. Officials say it’s essential to keep their communities safe.  

“These monies are used specifically to target what we call DTOs, drug trafficking organizations, and disrupting them,” says Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz.

A crime doesn’t end at the arrest. It continues at court with cases being assigned to a prosecutor.

Like Saenz, Hidalgo County District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez says the state funds will go to four prosecutors who deal with these types of offenses, an administrator and an investigator.
