SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – South Padre Island police said a man died after being found unresponsive at the island.

SPI police Chief Randy Smith told CHANNEL 5 NEWS it's not certain if the 63-year-old man died due to drowning or other medical reasons.

The man was spotted in knee-deep water and unresponsive near city beach access 3 around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Smith said beach goers helped get him out of the water and code enforcement crews nearby performed CPR.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Chief Smith said the exact cause of death is still unknown.

He added his department has seen an increase in calls to help distressed swimmers this week.

"I can't say whether it was associated with this call. I can tell you that over the past few days, and particularly this past weekend, we had lots of folks out here. I know we had red flag conditions up, which means be watching for rip currents and tidal surges with the heavier winds," he said.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory as well as a high rip current risk. They said the current conditions of the water are linked to tropical storm Cindy.

Smith said people should check the flags at each access to see the condition of the water and always go with a group.
