ALTON – Fire crews were able to extinguish a fire that consumed an abandoned home near Alton.

The blaze happened near Moorefield Road and Longview Drive Monday afternoon.

A DPS trooper said he noticed the smoke and called for help. Alton and Palmview firefighters responded.

Hidalgo County Fire Marshal Investigator John Franz said although the house was abandoned, it still had electricity flowing into it.

“You know it could be anything from rodents chewing on electrical wired causing it, to someone doing it on purpose. At this point, we’re not sure what caused this blaze,” he said.

AEP said they had to cut off the electricity to the house before firefighters could put out the fire.

Authorities deemed the house a total loss.

No injuries were reported.

The Hidalgo County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
