EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley is warning students after a case of the mumps was confirmed.

The mumps is a disease that causes swelling and can be deadly – it can spread quickly among students.

According to UTRGV, more than 27,000 students attend classes at its campus.

The university health staff says lab tests confirmed at least one case of the mumps.

They’re waiting on lab results to confirm a second reported case.

KRGV’s Christian von Preysing spoke with UTRGV’s medical director for student health, Dr. Cristal Escalona, about the symptoms and how to exercise caution.

"Symptoms that are consistent with mumps would be, you're having a headache, you're feeling weak, you have malaise, you have a fever, and then later, about five days into the illness, your salivary glands will start to swell up,” explains Escalona.
