Bond set for former Progreso city council candidate arrested on drug charges
A former candidate for Progreso's city council remains in federal custody Wednesday on drug charges, court records show.
Dagoberto Treviño was arrested on July 25 and accused of a conspiracy drug charge and possession of nearly 200 pounds of cocaine, his attorney previously told Channel 5 News.
Bond for Treviño was set on Tuesday at $100,000 with a $7,500 cash deposit requirement, court records show.
An indictment against Treviño was not available, but online court records indicate his arrest is linked to a cocaine trafficking scheme that led to the arrest of four other men.
Pedro Luis Lopez, Jose Gabriel Lopez-Garcia and Daniel Sanchez-Benavidez were arrested in June on charges of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance, court records show.
The indictment against all three men says they had approximately 194 pounds of cocaine on or about Nov. 13, 2022.
Further details of the alleged conspiracy were not provided in the indictment.
Another man, Jose Maria Riojas-Vazquez, was also arrested on July 25, court records show.
During Treviño’s initial court hearing last month, an attorney identified him as a former employee of Pedro Luis Lopez.
