WESLACO – U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Laredo sector said they rescued more than 20 people in the country illegally who were trapped due to cold conditions.

According to the agency, the rescue efforts happened in Laredo, Hebbronville, Freer and Zapata.

They said the immigrants became lost while walking in the brush. Some even began suffering from severe hypothermia.

Agents said they were from Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras.

Rescues also continued farther west.  Border Patrol agents with the Air and Marine Operations Alpine Air Unit rescued an additional group of 15 in the desert near Marfa.

Agents said they landed on a mountain where the immigrants were found.

One of the immigrants was found dead at the scene.

14 others were found in different stages of hypothermia.

The group was treated after being taken down from the mountaintop.
