PHARR – Long wait times at Rio Grande Valley ports of entry continue as officials are bracing for the possibility for a border shutdown. 

A protest caused the Pharr port of entry to close to passenger vehicles on Monday.

Superintendent of bridges Rigo Villarreal says the bridge officials experienced what they believe could be similar to the effects of a border shutdown.

"It affects trade, it affects traffic flow, it affects congestion… wait times I mean. It disrupts the whole synergy of trade,” says Villarreal.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS found there isn’t a set policy on who can go in or out during a border shutdown.

The only set policy is in the Immigration and Nationality Act, which gives the president broad leeway to close border traffic.
