BROWNSVILLE – A Brownville resident said slow draining water is a concern in her neighborhood.

One woman said the high-rising waters reached her home some five years ago. She was unable to get FEMA assistance to pay repairs.

City officials said drainage ditches all across Brownsville were cleaned out in preparation for Hurricane Harvey.

Brownsville Commissioner Jessica Tetreau-Kalifa said crews were sent out again and discovered one ditch was clogged with grass and mud.

“People will cut their grass, they’ll weed-eat and edge it into the street and then blow it with a blower off into the street,” she said. “And what people don’t understand is when you do that, it is one of the worst things that you can actually be doing for your home, because not only are you blocking the drainage for your house, but you’re blocking the drainage for very other home on the street.”

Tetreau-Kalifa said the neighborhood is not in one of the city’s severe-flooding areas. However, she said they will upgrade drainage wherever necessary.
