NEAR BROWNSVILLE - Brownsville firefighters responded to a call of a shrimp boat on fire Thursday morning.

The incident happened in the port of Brownsville. No one was injured.

Brownsville Fire Department Chief Carlos Elizondo said the fire was put out quickly. He said the boat was empty when they arrived despite initial reports of someone being onboard.

“What they found was inside the hull where they keep the shrimp. Possibly a light that was left on made contact with some of the fiberglass shielding that was in there that created the fire and smoke,” he said.

Elizondo said damage estimates are not yet available.
