BLUETOWN – A Cameron County resident who lives along the border said he noticed a major drop in people crossing illegally.

Bluetown resident Robert Martinez said it was different two months ago.

Martinez said he would find bundles of clothes scattered across his farm land, making it hard to do his job. He built a fence and installed motion lights to try and stop people from crossing into his property.

Now, he said illegal activity in the area has come to a halt.

“They only people we bump into each other at night is Border Patrol,” he said.

Border Patrol said the number of people crossing onto the U.S. illegally has dropped more than 50 percent. It’s the lowest number of crossings since fiscal year 2012. 

The agency hasn’t official cited the Trump administration as a reason for the decline.
