BROWNSVILLE – Officials are taking more action against delinquent taxpayers in Cameron County.

Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre Jr. said the county will file more than 300 lawsuits against property owners who haven’t paid their taxes. The lawsuits will be filed at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

County officials went door-to-door serving warrants against delinquent taxpayers last Thursday.

Yzaguirre issued the following release Thursday morning.

“When some taxpayers don’t pay their fair share, it puts tremendous strain on local governments trying to provide police and IRE protection, street maintenance, public schools and library services. It affects everyone,” he said.

Yzaguirre said the county is owed nearly $2.4 million.
