UPDATE (7/18/17): Complex fire ruled accidental.

MCALLEN – The cause of the fire at a McAllen apartment complex is undetermined, according to fire officials.

The fire broke out at the Abellon Condominiums on July 7.

McAllen Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Gerald Williamson said investigators could not determine the cause of the blaze.

He said the fire started inside the kitchen area of a second floor unit.

“There was a large amount of combustible material on top of the stove and adjacent to the stove, and we were able to point the origin to that location,” he explained. “We were also able to confirm that the apartment building did have electricity.”

Williamson told CHANNEL 5 NEWS the apartment building did have fire extinguishers.

He said they’re still working on investigating the building to see if any fire codes were violated.

The American Red Cross continues to assist the nearly 50 victims who were displaced.
