BROWNSVILLE – City leaders are using one of the city’s accounts to cover expenses related to the release of hundreds of immigrants.

Mayor Tony Martinez explains that last year’s budget set aside money for overtime throughout the year.

Those funds are now being used for security and transportation of families dropped off by Border Patrol at shelters.

Mayor Martinez says it’s in everyone’s best interest.

"The thing about it is you're going to have a certain amount of expense at the city level, because we're working a little bit longer than usual. Those are the things that have to be taken care of because they can affect your entire community," he says.

Martinez says they’re drawing funds from the city’s rainy day fund.
