WESLACO – Justice backtracked for a law enforcement family. The convictions of two codefendants who went to trial for the murder of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent are vacated.

The ruling come from a Washington, DC appellate court. They were convicted in the 2017 murder of ICE Special Agent Javier Zapata of Brownsville.

Zapata was killed in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on Feb. 15, 2011 in an ambush attack. His partner ICE Special Agent Victor Avila was wounded.

In a statement, the Zapata family said in part:

“We are terribly upset over the fact that government has so much consideration for these murderous criminals. They choose their fate. Jaime's full life and potential was cut short because of their planned evil actions.”

Avila also reacted to the circuit court decision and its impact on all codefendants in the case.
