HARLINGEN – Cleanup at a five-acre lot in Cameron County is on hold after the commissioners court granted the property owner additional time to tend to his land.

Cameron County officials devised a master plan to go into the property and clean it up.

Cameron County Precinct 4 Commissioner Gus Ruiz said the Dillworth Road lot was a health and safety hazard.

The lot was filled with more than 1,000 tires, scrap metal, plastic, junk and debris.

Cameron County officials told CHANNEL 5 NEWS they’ve cleaned up just more than half of the five-acre lot, but they were running out of money.

They had to ask commissioners' court for additional funding.

The court awarded them $10,000 to pay for trash disposal, according to the county, that brought the total spent on cleanup close to $40,000 overall.

The property owner, Juan Ortiz, also asked commissioners court for more time to go through his property.

That was approved, which means the county will have to wait until the beginning of August to finish cleaning up.
