Halloween is just weeks away, but the Rio Grande Valley isn't preparing for trick-or-treat.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez and Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. prohibited the annual tradition, concerned about the coronavirus.

Doctors agreed with the decision.

"Young children walking door-to-door, putting their hands into a communal bowl or jar with things that they're then going to take and put in their mouth, it's just the perfect recipe for being able to transmit something like COVID-19," said Dr. Christopher Romero of Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.

Romero and other health experts recommend that families avoid large Halloween gatherings and celebrate at home instead.
