BROWNSVILLE – The Raiders are roaring for their soccer teams. For the first time in school history, the Rivera boys and girls have reached the regional semifinals.

“It feels amazing,” said Myrka Guevara. “We worked really hard for this. It’s a lot of effort we’re going to give into it.”

It’s the first time the girls team makes it this far in the postseason.

“They’ve gotten so much better than they were last year,” said girls coach Peter Rodriguez. “There’s a new addition to the team. A couple of newcomers that have really helped out.”

The boys team is on the roll, having won nine straight along with the 32-6A title.

“Whenever we put the ball on the ground, whenever we have the communication, that’s our style of soccer,” said boys coach Sal Garcia. “At this point of the season, we’re playing this way.”

“Just having faith in the team and coach and the man upstairs,” said Roberto Melendez. “We’ve been putting in the work since the summer.”

Both teams will play Friday at the Blossom Athletic Center in San Antonio.

The girls squad takes on Lake Travis at 1pm.

The boys will face San Antonio Lee at 5pm.
