A Cameron County deputy constable was killed in a Monday crash, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Cameron County officials and other law enforcement agencies sent their condolences to the family of Cameron County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia.

The crash happened Monday at around 6:45 p.m. on State Highway 48 near Marine Way Road in Brownsville when a white Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended a patrol unit occupied by Garcia, according to a DPS news release.

According to the release, the driver of the Chevrolet admitted to being distracted while looking at his phone and driving.

"We suspect the driver was driving under the influence, and Magistrate Leonardo Rincones signed a search warrant for his blood," the release added.

The release did not identify the driver of the Chevrolet vehicle. Cameron County Precinct 1 Constable Norman Esquivel confirmed to Channel 5 News that the driver remains hospitalized as of Tuesday afternoon.

According to the release, Garcia was at the scene getting ready to leave after assisting DPS troopers with another crash at the same location when his vehicle was rear-ended.

DPS troopers continue investigating the crash.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
